A roof here has four different problems across the year, and they are not the same four a roof in Denver or Dallas has. This calendar is built around the actual Northeast Oklahoma pattern.
Spring — hail season
This is the season that ends roofs around here. The Oklahoma Climatological Survey puts Ottawa County at four to five days a year with hail larger than three-quarters of an inch, and most of that arrives in spring.
Spring
- Walk the perimeter after every significant storm — it takes five minutes
- Check the gutters and vent caps for dents (they bruise before shingles show anything)
- Look for shingles or granule piles in the yard and at the downspout base
- Clear winter debris out of the valleys
- Photograph anything you find, dated, before you call anyone
- Book a free inspection if the soft metals look dimpled
Summer — heat and UV
57 days above 90°F, five above 100°F, an August daily high that normals at 91.5°F, and roughly 62% of possible sunshine across the year. The roof surface runs far hotter than the air. This is when a badly ventilated attic quietly destroys a roof from underneath.
Summer
- Check the attic on a hot afternoon — if it is brutal up there, the ventilation is not working
- Confirm the soffit vents at the eaves are not blocked by insulation
- Look for a ridge vent or turbines; plenty of older homes here never had either
- Check pipe boots — the rubber collars around plumbing vents crack in UV, and they are the cheapest repair on the roof
- Stay off the roof: softened asphalt scuffs and tears under a boot
Autumn — leaf load
Eastern Ottawa County sits in the Ozark Plains — rockier, wooded, rolling. That means real tree cover and real debris. West of that, in the Neosho Lowlands, it is flatter and more open, and this matters less.

- Clear the gutters — twice if you have mature hardwoods
- Clear the valleys; packed leaves hold moisture against the shingle and strip granules
- Check that downspouts discharge away from the foundation
- Trim branches that touch or overhang the roof
- Book anything you have been putting off now, before winter finds it
Winter — freeze-thaw
89 nights a year below freezing. That is 89 chances for water sitting in a seam or under a lifted shingle to freeze, expand, and pry it further open. Freeze-thaw is why flashing details fail here — not because the flashing was cheap, but because it gets worked loose 89 times a year.

- After a hard freeze, look for lifted or displaced shingles from the ground
- Watch for ceiling stains appearing during a thaw rather than during rain
- Check the attic for frost on the underside of the decking (a ventilation problem, not a leak)
- Keep gutters clear so meltwater has somewhere to go
- Do not go up there. Ever, in ice.
