Northeast Oklahoma averages four to five days a year with hail larger than three-quarters of an inch, according to the Oklahoma Climatological Survey. That is the only hail figure worth quoting, because it is the only one that is actually sourced. Here is what those days do to a roof.
What hail damage actually is
People expect a hole. That is not how it works. A hail strike knocks granules loose and fractures the asphalt mat underneath them — the layer that does the waterproofing. The shingle stays on the roof and keeps looking like a shingle. But the mat is broken, the granules that shielded it from ultraviolet light are gone, and now the sun gets at it directly. Two or three summers later the shingle fails, and it fails looking exactly like ordinary ageing.
That delay is the whole problem. The damage happens on one afternoon; the leak arrives years after your claim window has closed.

What to do if you think you have it
In order
- Photograph everything, dated, before anyone touches anything — inside and out, from the ground
- Note the date of the storm if you know it
- Get a free inspection so you know whether there is real, claimable damage
- Decide whether filing is actually in your interest — if the damage is close to your deductible, it may not be
- If you file, ask your roofer to be there when the adjuster comes
